On the Blue Coast, between Martigues and Marseille, small-scale traditional fishing is mainly carried out with trammel nets. Joseph and Mohamed’s home port is the small village of Carro, from where they leave daily to set and pull their nets. Catches have become scarce in recent years and this activity, which once flourished, is becoming less and less lucrative. A lot of work for a meager result… Only a few kilos of red mullets, pageots and sea breams come to garnish the crates. But much more than a means of subsistence, this “profession” is also a way of life that unfolds its magic on the intense blue of the Mediterranean Sea.
